Punahou won boys and girls ILH team titles in track and field on Friday at Kamehameha.
The Buffanblu boys scored 209 points, leaving Kamehameha (91) and Saint Louis (69) way behind.
Punahou’s girls were nearly as dominant, scoring 190 points to beat ‘Iolani (114) and Kamehameha (65).
Punahou’s Andrei Iosivas had two of the top performances, cruising to a 21.66 time for gold in the 200-meter dash to go with his 24 feet, 0.25-inch effort in the long jump to claim another gold.
Hawaii Baptist’s Madison Moku won the 100-meter hurdles in 14.77 seconds for a meet record.
Stevie Marvin, Alia Yamafuji, Kaylie Klausing and Kealoha Scullion teamed up to give Punahou a record in the 4×100-meter relay with a time of 49.34 seconds.
Others to win multiple events were Punahou’s Alama Uluave in the shot and discus and Jason Wang of ‘Iolani in the boys 1,500-meter and 3,000-meter races.
Moku also won gold in the 300 hurdles and Punahou’s Maiya Fujiwara won both the 800 and 1,500.
Vulcan tennis hosts NCAA prelim match
The Hawaii Hilo men’s tennis team hosts Point Loma Nazarene in an NCAA Division II preliminary round match this afternoon at 2 p.m., at the Holua Tennis Center in Kailua-Kona.
The winner advances to the 16-team national tournament at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Center in Arizona, May 9-12. The Vulcans (16-2) beat PLNU (14-9) last month 6-3, although the teams split the singles matches.
A UH Hilo win would send the squad to the national tournament site for what is thought to be only the second time in school history.
Hawaii surfers win WSL Big Wave awards
Four Hawaii big wave surfers won awards on Sunday, as announced by the World Surf League at the 2018 WSL Big Wave Awards in Santa Monica, Calif.
Ian Walsh (Haiku) was the big winner of the night, placing first in two categories. Walsh won tube of the year and ride of the year for his ride at Jaws on Maui on Oct. 28, 2017.
Aaron Gold (Haleiwa) took first place in the biggest paddle award category for his ride at Jaws on Jan. 14, 2018.
Paige Alms (Haiku) won top honors in the Hydro Flask women’s best performance category. Placing fourth was Haleiwa’s Keala Kennelly.
Kai Lenny (Haiku) took second place in the men’s best overall performance category. Billy Kemper (Haiku) finished fourth, Welsh took fifth, while Nathan Florence (Haleiwa) came in sixth place.
HPU acrobatics and tumbling take awards
Hawaii Pacific took home a national championship, and also took home two silvers, a bronze and two fourth-place finishes at the 2018 National Collegiate Acrobatics and Tumbling Association Individual Championships on Saturday in Erie, Pa.
HPU won the national championship in the six-element acro event, while winning silver in the aerial pass and inversion pyramid events. A bronze was won in the five-element acro event.
Named to the NCATA All-American team for their performances throughout the year were Daisha Paulino (Kapolei/Maryknoll School) and Makayla Garland (Lathrop, Calif.).
