Seven weeks after learning about a “security incident” involving its credit and debit card processing system, the Oahu-centric restaurant finally alerted customers on Friday that a data breach has affected all of its 25 eateries as well as its Napoleon’s Bakery, Kahala Sushi and Pearl City Sushi locations.
Thousands of cards used for purchases between Nov. 23 and March 29 may have been compromised. Zippy’s attributes its slow-moving response to a standard practice of conducting an internal investigation before going public. Customers are now advised to review credit and debit card statements for suspicious activity.
On Koreas, cautious optimism goes only so far
The world has been left a bit giddy — perhaps suffering from whiplash — by the stunning reversal in rhetoric coming from the Korean peninsula. Not so long after Hawaii panicked about imagined missile strikes, leaders of the two Koreas are exchanging handshakes in the demilitarized zone.
But in the interest of preparedness, members of Congress are looking at a new warship and missile defenses to protect Hawaii. We can’t be too careful. Still, we seem to be in a more stable place than a few short months ago. Shaking hands is a good thing — better than trembling.
