The 13th annual Hawaii Book and Music Festival runs this weekend, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday on the Frank F. Fasi Civic Center grounds, adjacent to Honolulu Hale.
This free event celebrates books, storytelling and music in way that’s fun for all ages. The festival is dedicated to honoring Hawaii’s culture through local authors, performing artists and panel discussions that explore topics of community interest.
The Food and Cookbook pavilion will feature a dynamic array of demonstrations by island chefs, educational activities and panels as well as a farmers’ market, a food system resource table and interactive keiki activities connected to food and farming. Here are recipes from two groups that will be presenting demonstrations in the Food and Cookbook pavilion, Local I‘a and Pili Group.
KAJIKI (MARLIN) BURGERS
By Local I’a
- 1-1/2 pounds marlin, cut in chunks
- 1 onion, diced
- 3 tablespoons fresh chopped dill
- 2 tablespoons minced garlic
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
Place fish into food processor and pulse until it resembles consistency of ground meat. Transfer to large bowl and add remaining ingredients. Mix and form into 6 patties.
Heat oil in skillet and cook patties on medium for 1-2 minutes, until lightly brown on both sides. They will continue cooking when taken off the heat. Serve on top of salads or as sliders with your favorite condiments. Serves 6.
Approximate nutritional information, per serving (assumes 2 tablespoons oil per patty; not including condiments): 260 calories, 17 g total fat, 2.5 g saturated fat, 75 mg cholesterol, 100 mg sodium, 3 g carbohydrate, no fiber, 1 g sugar, 23 g protein.
POI SMOOTHIE
Pili Group
- 4 ripe apple bananas
- 2 cups coconut water
- 1 large ripe papaya, halved and seeded
- 1 cup fresh poi
- 2 cups frozen organic berries (may substitute with mango if in season)
- Chia seeds (optional)
Peel bananas and place in blender. Add coconut water. Scoop in papaya. Add poi, berries and chia seeds, if using. Blend all ingredients until smooth. Add more coconut water if needed to reach desired consistency. Serves 3.
