The No. 1 and 2 seeds are all alive after Thursday’s first day of the HMSA/HHSAA Tennis Championships at Central Oahu Regional Park.
The tournament continues today with the quarterfinals and semifinals in boys and girls singles and doubles, with the finals slated for 8:30 a.m. Saturday.
Top seed Phuc Huynh of ‘Iolani and second seed Andre Ilagan of Farrington are both going for a second state boys singles titles. Huynh topped Kalaheo’s Patrick Turner 6-1, 6-0 before dispatching St. Anthony’s Tyson Wu 6-0, 6-0.
On the other side of the bracket, Ilagan — the defending champion — dropped Maui’s Quinn Shapiro 6-0, 6-1 and then defeated Hilo’s Luke Hamano 6-0, 6-0.
In girls singles, top-seeded Alyssia Fossorier of Punahou and second-seeded Katreina Corpuz, also of the Buffanblu, are on a collision course for the championship. Fossorier knocked off Mililani’s Kathrynn Hamada 6-1, 6-1 and Waimea’s Kari Correa 6-0, 6-0.
Corpuz, the defending champion, beat Moanalua’s Skyler Chun 6-0, 6-0 and Hilo’s Casydee DeMattos 6-2, 6-0.
If the top two boys doubles seeds stay on track, the final could be an all-‘Iolani affair. Defending champions and top-seeded Jordan Azuma and Joey Hu of the Raiders won two matches Thursday, as did ‘Iolani teammates and second-seeded Robert Chang and Cody Ching.
In girls doubles, both top seeds have survived so far through two matches — No. 1 Jackie O’Neill and Cosette Wu of Punahou and No. 2 Alicia Chun and Keilyn Kunimoto of Waiakea.
In the team standings, the defending champion ‘Iolani boys and Punahou girls are leading the way heading into today’s matches.
