The University of Hawaii beach volleyball team was ranked third in the final AVCA Collegiate poll released Monday.
At the NCAA tournament in Gulf Shores, Ala., the SandBows (37-5) lost to Florida State in the winners bracket on Saturday and were eliminated by eventual national champion UCLA on Sunday.
UCLA was No. 1 and Florida State was No. 2. Pepperdine was No. 4 and Southern Cal was No. 5.
UH MEN’S VOLLEYBALL FINISHES AT NO. 5
The University of Hawaii men’s volleyball team was No. 5 in the final AVCA Division I-II poll released Monday.
The Rainbow Warriors were 19-8 and didn’t qualify for the NCAA tournament.
Long Beach State, the national champion, was No. 1. UCLA, BYU and Ohio State followed.
GONZALEZ DOS SANTOS EARNS TENNIS AWARD
Hawaii Pacific senior Leticia Gonzalez dos Santos was the recipient of the Elite 90 Award for NCAA Division II women’s tennis.
Gonzalez dos Santos of Sao Jose do Rio Preto, Brazil, is 4-4 in singles and 11-10 in doubles this season and maintains a 4.0 grade-point average in communications studies. She received the award during the NCAA Championships banquet in Surprise, Ariz., on Monday.
The Elite 90 Award honors individuals who reach the national championship level in their sports and display exemplary academic achievement.
The No. 2 Sharks face No. 11 Midwestern State (Texas) in the Round of 16 at the NCAA tournament today in Surprise.
On the men’s side, Hawaii Hilo will face Indianapolis on Wednesday in the Round of 16.
HPU BASEBALL DUO HONORED BY PACWEST
Hawaii Pacific left-hander Joshua Muneno has been named the PacWest pitcher of the week and infielder Micah Layosa earned freshman of the week honors, the conference announced Monday.
Muneno, a junior from Honolulu, pitched a six-hitter with no walks and five strikeouts in the Sharks’ 12-0 victory over Hawaii Hilo on Sunday.
Layosa, a freshman from Lihue, batted 4-for-8 with two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI as HPU took two of three games from Hilo over the weekend.
