Boat shuttle transport to the USS Arizona Memorial will be reinstated today following a temporary suspension to investigate a crack in the supporting structure for the visitor loading ramp. Structural repairs were made Tuesday by the monument’s facilities chief and members of the Concrete Preservation Institute, a nonprofit educational foundation that partners with the National Park Service.
“While safety of the visiting public was our primary concern, an effort was made to resume operations as quickly as possible,” the park service said in a news release.

Agency warns public of water contamination
The Department of Health is warning the public to stay out of Alaialoa and Kaohaoha gulches below Mamalahoa Highway in Ookala. Stormwater within both gulches could be contaminated with animal waste due to spills from the Big Island Dairy facility.
Big Island Dairy said untreated wastewater from its wastewater treatment system spilled from a damaged sewage pipe Sunday. Although the spill was reportedly stopped within 30 minutes, wastewater discharged into Alaialoa Gulch. The total volume of discharge is unknown but believed to be greater than 1,000 gallons. In addition, the dairy owner notified DOH that wastewater from the dairy’s lagoons could overflow into Kaohaoha Gulch due to heavy rain.
The DOH is advising the public to avoid contact with water within Alaialoa and Kaohaoha gulches in areas between the Big Island Dairy and shoreline east of Ookala town. Warning signs have been posted in the area. Officials think the contamination may have reached coastal waters and that further discharges are possible.
