Hawaii Pacific pitcher Joshua Muneno was named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Division II West Region pitcher of the week on Tuesday.
Muneno, who was named the PacWest pitcher of the week on Monday, tossed a six-hit shutout with five strikeouts against Hawaii Hilo on Sunday. It was the second straight outing for Muneno with no earned runs allowed, raising his streak to 17 scoreless innings.
HPU advances in NCAA tennis tourney
The second-ranked Hawaii Pacific University women’s tennis team advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II championships with a 5-2 win over No. 11 Midwestern State on Tuesday in Surprise, Ariz.
The Sharks (20-2) won their ninth straight and face No. 23 Missouri-St. Louis today at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Center. Lena Lutzier won her doubles match with Oceane Adam and clinched the match with a 6-0, 7-5 singles win over No. 19 Maddy Coffman.
Also Tuesday, HPU coach Lauren Conching was named the 2018 Wilson Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division II women’s coach of the year. Lutzeier was named the ITA senior player of the year and Lara Meccico was named the most improved senior. Lutzeier is the No. 1 ranked singles player in Division II. Meccico is ranked third.
Gaspar named to PacWest first team
Hawaii Hilo senior third baseman Bailey Gaspar was named the All-PacWest Conference softball first team on Tuesday.
Gaspar ranked in the top five in the PacWest in six categories, including leading the conference with 54 RBIs. She batted .404 this season with 10 doubles and 15 home runs. Her home run and RBI totals set school records.
Also honored from Hawaii Hilo were freshman Kiarra Lincoln, who made the second team as a second baseman, and sophomore Brinell Kaleikini as a utility selection. Hawaii Pacific freshman Cienna Curran also made the second team as an outfielder. HPU senior Noelani Boyer made the third team as a utility selection.
Chaminade inks 2 for 2019
Chaminade softball coach Kent Yamaguchi announced the signings of National Letters of Intent by two local standouts on Tuesday.
Hailey Matsumura, a senior infielder from St. Francis, is a four-year starter who helped the Saints to a second-place finish in the 2017 HHSAA Division II championships, while earning ILH second-team honors. This season, she helped the Saints to the No. 4 ranking in the state.
Cheyne Obara, a senior infielder from Pearl City, is a two-time All-OIA West selection. She has helped lead the Chargers to four consecutive HHSAA Division I appearances.
