Bailey Gaspar and Brinell Kaleikini of the Hawaii Hilo softball team were named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association NCAA Division II All-West Region second team on Wednesday.
Gaspar made the team as a third baseman, and Kaleikini made it as a utility player.
The two players are now eligible for the NFCA All-America team, which will be announced at the NCAA National Championships on May 23 in Salem, Va.
Sharks advance to final 4
The No. 2 Hawaii Pacific women’s tennis team swept No. 23 Missouri-St. Louis on Wednesday, advancing into the final four of the 2018 NCAA Division II Women’s Tennis Championships in Surprise, Ariz.
HPU opened the day winning all three doubles matches. Then, in singles play, Lena Lutzeier breezed to a 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 1 court, and Lara Meccico easily won at No. 2, 6-0, 6-1, to clinch the match.
The Sharks advance to the Final Four for the third straight year, and for the fifth time in six years. They will face No. 4 West Florida today.
Vulcans fall in round of 16
The Hawaii Hilo men’s tennis team saw its season come to a close, falling just short, 5-3, to the University of Indianapolis in the NCAA Division II Men’s Tennis Championships in Surprise, Ariz.
The Greyhounds took two of the three doubles matches to start the day to gain an edge heading in singles play. In singles, Alessandro Giuliato evened up the score with a win at No. 2, but Indianapolis regained the advantage by winning the No. 3 and No. 4 singles matches. Hilo’s Vaclav Slezak won his No. 1 singles match, but Arturo Dell’eva fell in dramatic fashion 7-6 (8), 7-6 (6) in the No. 5 singles to end it.
The Vulcans finished the season at 17-3.
