If offense is the key to winning the 2018 Wally Yonamine Foundation/HHSAA State Baseball Championships, then ‘Iolani is feeling pretty good about things.
The ILH runner-up Raiders scored double-digit runs for the second straight day, pounding out 13 hits in a 12-8 win over OIA champion Mililani in Wednesday’s quarterfinals.
‘Iolani (16-5-1) advances to play Baldwin tonight in the second semifinal game at 7.
Senior Shane Sasaki recorded the first four-hit game in the state tournament since Mid-Pacific’s Tyler Yamaguchi in 2015.
Sasaki scored twice and drove in two runs to lead ‘Iolani, which has scored 23 runs in its first two games.
“I feel like we’re in pretty good shape right now, swinging the bat well and seeing the ball pretty good,” Sasaki said.
‘Iolani starter Logan Yee picked up the win, lasting 6 1/3 innings. After giving up three runs in the first inning to fall behind 3-1, Yee put up five straight scoreless innings.
“That’s the last time he’s throwing in high school and he let it hang,” ‘Iolani coach Kurt Miyahira said. “He emptied the tank and gave us all he had, and that’s all we could ask of him.”
