A man who broke three antique door windowpanes at Iolani Palace last year has been sentenced to
10 years in jail.
Michael Aquino, 58, also faces five years in prison for breaking glass in a door to the House of Representatives chambers of the state Capitol building in the same May 28 incident.
Aquino used a metal pipe to damage the Iolani Palace doors, which were more than 100 years old. He pleaded guilty to felony criminal property damage March 1 and was sentenced May 2.
“Iolani Palace is a cultural and historical treasure, and the State Capitol is an important public building,” state Attorney General Russell Suzuki said in a statement released Friday.
“They are important
symbols and resources
for the community and should be protected from the kind of senseless vandalism that Mr. Aquino committed.”
Aquino was also ordered to pay $29,598.45 in restitution to the Friends of Iolani Palace and $4,714 to the state.
