Stop 4 of the World Surf League Championship Tour, the Oi Rio Pro, featured three Hawaii surfers competing in Round 2. Carissa Moore is on to Round 3, but the other two — Coco Ho and Malia Manuel — lost on Sunday in 3- to 4-foot surf.
To open up Round 2, USA’s Sage Erickson eliminated Ho 9.77 to 9.17 while Australia’s Keely Andrew defeated Manuel in the final seconds of the last heat of the day 8.77 to 8.60.
On the men’s side, Round 1 begins with the following surfers representing Hawaii: John John Florence, Sebastian Zietz, Keanu Asing and Ezekiel Lau.
The event continues today, surf permitting.
Sharks, Vulcans split baseball twinbill
Hawaii Pacific and Hawaii Hilo split a baseball doubleheader on Sunday at Hans L’Orange Park, with the Sharks winning a PacWest Conference game 3-2 and the Vulcans taking a nonconference encounter 7-3.
Evan-Thomas May pitched a complete game for HPU (22-27, 15-25 PacWest), holding off a Vulcans rally in the top of the seventh. Ryan Torres-Torioka doubled and drove in two runs in a three-run fifth while Codi Santana, Christian Kapeliela and Trey Yukumoto eached batted 2-for-3 for the Sharks. Jonathan Segovia had two hits and drove in both runs in the seventh for UHH (20-27, 16-22).
RJ Romo went 3-for-5 while Segovia, Phillip Steering, Edwin Stanberry and Reese Kato each had two hits in the nonconference win for the Vulcans (21-27). Wyatt Hoppie went 3-for-4 and Santana added two hits and scored twice for the Sharks (22-28).
