Hawaii men’s basketball’s offseason foreign tour to Australia is now official in dates, sites and name.
The “2018 Down Under Tour” will take place Aug. 8-19 at four different locations — Brisbane/Gold Coast, Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney — UH announced on Tuesday. The Star-Advertiser had previously reported the projected dates and sites.
Specific opponents for four exhibition games are still unknown. UH hopes to play one professional or semi-professional team in each city.
Fourth-year coach Eran Ganot has made recruiting Australia a top priority; UH will take three Australian players (senior Jack Purchase and freshmen Mate Colina and Owen Hulland) home for the trip among what’s expected to be the Rainbows’ full 2018-19 roster.

The NCAA allows teams to take a foreign tour once every four years. UH basketball’s last foreign tour was to China and Japan in 2011 under Gib Arnold. As part of these trips, teams are allotted 10 full practices prior to departure.
“To be able to have 10 days of practice in addition to the opportunity to play against some of the best teams in Australia is something we’re all looking forward to,” Ganot said in a UH release. “It’s a great way to get our newcomers integrated and should give us plenty of momentum going into our 2018-19 season.”
Fans or boosters interested in traveling with the team can email David Loboja (dl@allaussie.com.au) of tour organizer Aussie Basketball Travellers. The projected cost is $3,549 U.S. dollars per person, including airfare, lodging, ground travel, and some meals and sightseeing.
Non-basketball activities are to include an Australian Rules Football game in Melbourne, and a harbour cruise and visit to the famous zoo in Sydney.
“This is such a rare opportunity,” Ganot said. “We’ll be visiting some of the best cities in the world and it will be an exciting and memorable experience for our players, staff, families and friends. Australia has been such a big part of my life and my family’s life, so to be able to share this incredible country with everybody is going to be awesome.”
The UH women’s basketball team also is taking an August tour to Australia and New Zealand. The Rainbow Wahine announced their trip back in October.
