Three female Hawaiian monk seals were found dead on Oahu this week, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Fisheries on Friday.
On Tuesday an adult female seal identified as RK60 was found floating offshore. It’s unclear exactly where she was found; however, officials say she may have been observed “floating listlessly” in Kaneohe Bay days before she was discovered lifeless, according to a NOAA news release.
The next morning, a female pup was found in Laie, and an adult female seal identified as RT10 was found Thursday in Kahuku.
Officials said they think the seals’ deaths were unrelated.
Postmortem exams were conducted, and lab results are expected to be completed in the coming weeks to determine the exact causes of death.
