Baldwin High alumnus Kurt Suzuki came home as the winning run in Atlanta’s 10-9 walk-off victory over Miami.
Suzuki, who had a pinch-hit RBI single in the ninth inning, came around on Dansby Swanson’s two-run single later in the frame.
On Saturday the 34-year-old catcher tied fellow Maui native Shane Victorino for the most career MLB home runs for a Hawaii-born player (108) and now has 17 RBIs on the season batting .271.
Yates picks up win for Padres
Kauai native KirbyYates gave up his first run in his last 11 appearances but still managed to pick up his third win of the season in San Diego’s 8-5 victory over Pittsburgh.
Yates (3-0) worked the eighth inning and gave up the goahead run on a sacrifice fly by Josh Harrison, but limited the damage and the Padres scored four times in the top of the ninth inning. It was only the second earned run allowed this season by Yates, whose ERA rose from 0.60 to 1.13.
Garcia drives in pair in Cardinals’ victory
Former University of Hawaii player Greg Garcia got the start at shortstop for St. Louis and delivered two RBIs in a 5-1 Cardinals victory over Philadelphia.
Garcia singled in Dexter Fowler in the fourth inning for the go-ahead run and scored Fowler again in the sixth on a sacrifice fly. They were the utilityman’s eighth and ninth RBIs of the season.
Garcia’s former UH teammate, second baseman Kolten Wong, went 0-for-3 in dropping his average to .179.
