National Donut Day is Friday, which means special deals on the morning treats, but more importantly the celebration recognizes and rewards the good works of the Salvation Army.
Donut Day dates to 1917, when the Salvation Army’s “Donut Lassies” started serving the pastries to soldiers on the front lines of World War I in France. Donut Day honors those female volunteers, who provided supplies and assistance to servicemen through the war.
Where to celebrate Donut Day:
>> Regal Bakery, 3040 Ualena St., and Cafe Sasa by Regal Bakery in the Chinese Cultural Center are handing out free doughnuts from 6 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. A percentage of sales of additional pastries will go to the Salvation Army, and cash donations will be collected in the army’s traditional red kettles.
>> Dunkin’ Donuts’ four Oahu locations are selling a cream-filled heart-shaped doughnut for $1.29, with all proceeds going to the Salvation Army. The red-and-white striped treats will be made for one day only.
>> Oahu’s 7-Eleven stores will have a six-piece assortment of cake doughnuts for $7.11, with 10 percent of net proceeds going to the charity.
>> Pipeline Bakeshop & Creamery in Kaimuki will feature Donut Day flavors of lilikoi and matcha. From 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., the purchase of 12 malasadas will get you a 13th for free. Drop a donation in a red kettle while you’re picking up your treats.
>> The Disabled American Veterans will hand out free doughnuts at Tripler Army Medical Center’s Spark Matsunaga Clinic from 9 a.m. to noon.
>> All Salvation Army Thrift Stores will give away doughnuts and coupons for free Dunkin’ Donuts.
>> On the neighbor islands, get your free doughnut at Maui’s Krispy Kreme from 7 to 11 a.m. (make a red-kettle donation while you’re there) or Kauai’s Daylight Donuts from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. Daylight Donuts will donate a percentage of sales of additional doughnuts.
Costumed “lassies” will help collect donations and pose for photos at some of the participating sites.
