Hanauma Bay extends summer hours

The Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve begins its extended summer schedule starting Saturday, and will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, except for Tuesdays when it is closed to the public, according to city officials.

This summer schedule, which keeps the preserve open an hour later, is effective through Labor Day weekend.

The seasonal hour shift is mandated by amended rules and regulations for visitor use levels and controls at Hanauma Bay, according to the city Department of Parks and Recreation, which operates the preserve.

Bacteria advisories canceled for Maui, Oahu

The state Health Department has canceled the high bacteria advisories for waters off of Lanikai Beach on Oahu as well as Cove Park of Maui originally issued Thursday.

On Oahu, levels of 150 per 100 milliliters of enterococci were detected off of the Lanikai Beach shoreline during routine monitoring.

On Maui, levels of 205 per 100 milliliters of enterococci were detected off Cove Park.

The high bacteria advisory for Kepuhi Beach, Kauai, originally posted last week, remains in effect. On Kauai, levels of 222 per 100 milliliters of enterococci were detected off of Kepuhi Beach. The area affected stretches from Wainiha Bay Park past Makahoa Point to Waikoko Reef.

A brown-water advisory also remains in effect for Haena Beach on Kauai.

The Department of Health Clean Water Branch provides beach monitoring and notification through its beach program.

Former police officer convicted of cyberstalking

A former Kauai police officer was convicted Thursday of using a department surveillance system to cyberstalk a co-worker.

Damian Loo, 49, of Lihue was found guilty by a jury of misdemeanor harassment by stalking and use of a computer in the commission of a separate crime, a Class C felony.

Prosecutors said Loo used the surveillance system to watch a civilian co-worker as she entered and exited work between March 22 and April 13, 2017.

Sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 16. Loo faces up to five years and $10,000 for the felony offense and one year in jail and a $2,000 fine for the harassment conviction.

Hanapepe transfer station not taking loose mixed waste

The Hanapepe refuse transfer station is temporarily unable to accept loose mixed waste due to electrical problems, according to the Kauai Solid Waste Division.

The facility is still accepting bagged trash, green waste, scrap metal, appliances, propane tanks, used tires and residents’ used motor oil for recycling.

Residents who need to dispose of loose mixed waste are advised to use the Kekaha Landfill or Lihue refuse transfer station.

Also, the Kapaa refuse transfer station has resumed all operations following repairs.
