The University of Hawaii is set to serve as host to the state’s only NCAA Division I football camp for high-school-aged students.

The full-pad Rainbow Warrior Elite Football Camp is scheduled for June 8 and 9 on the UH campus.

An NCAA rule limits Division I coaches to participating only in camps hosted by an FBS school. Next week’s camp will feature instruction from coaches from six Pac-12 members — California, Oregon, UCLA, USC, Washington and Washington State. Azusa Pacific, Adams State, Dixie State and Pacific also will participate.

UH coach Nick Rolovich said the camp will be beneficial to players who want exposure to Division I programs, as well as those preparing for their high school seasons.

“We feel it’s a good opportunity for our local kids to get instruction from coaches all over the country and our staff,” Rolovich said. “This is the only camp (in Hawaii) where Division I coaches can be. I think it saves families a lot of money as far as trying to go to the mainland to camp with all these schools. We’ve seen this model be successful in the last few years.”

Rolovich said there will “scenarios” in which campers will run plays plucked from actual Division I playbooks.

“It’s two days of instruction,” Rolovich said. “Hopefully, everybody comes out learning something and is a better football player. It’s for everybody. … We want to really give people as much reps and opportunities to get better.”

Rolovich noted it will be a “full-contact camp.” There will be scrimmage-like sessions.

Rolovich said: “It’s, ‘Let’s get down. Let’s hit, tackle, throw and catch, and play the game.”

The June 8 session is from 5 to 8 p.m. (registration begins at 4 p.m.). The June 9 session is from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (7 a.m. check-in).

The registration fee is $185 for the two-day camp.
