The Board of Education has selected three new members to serve on the State Charter School Commission and is seeking candidates to fill another vacancy expected this summer.
The new members will begin their three-year terms July 1:
>> Harald Barkhoff, professor and chairman of the Department of Kinesiology and Exercise Sciences at the University of Hawaii at Hilo, served on the commission’s precursor, the Charter School Review Panel, and chairs the school board for Kua O Ka La Public Charter School in Pahoa.
>> Shannon Cleary, board president of the Hawaii Public Charter School Network, will step down from that position to serve on the state commission. She is director of advancement for Le Jardin Academy and previously worked in the same role at Hawaii Technology Academy, the state’s largest charter school.
>> Cathy K. Ikeda, assistant professor of education at the University of Hawaii West Oahu, taught for many years at the middle and secondary school levels and is now a “teacher of teachers.”
Commission Chairwoman Catherine Payne was appointed by Gov. David Ige to head the Board of Education and starts there July 1. Other members leaving the commission are visitor industry veteran Ernest Nishizaki and retired educator Roger Takabayashi, who used to head the Hawaii State Teachers Association.
The Board of Education will accept applications and nominations for another member of the Charter School Commission until June 21. The term is expected to start Aug. 2. To apply or learn more, visit boe.hawaii.gov.
The nine-member commission oversees the state’s charter schools, which have more autonomy than other public schools and report to their own governing boards. Like Board of Education members, commission members serve as volunteers.
