The city will restrict parking in Lanikai for the three-day Kamehameha Day holiday weekend in its continuing effort to balance public access to nearby beaches with public safety for the community.
No parking on all Lanikai streets and shoulders will be allowed from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday through Monday.
Temporary “sawhorse” type signs will be placed on streets in Lanikai. The Honolulu Police Department also has agreed to provide an electronic messaging board at the entrance of Lanikai on Mokulua Drive to warn motorists of the parking restrictions. However, under an agreement with the Lanikai Association and the city Department of Transportation Services, this additional warning may not be available for future three-day holidays.
Those wishing to access Lanikai beach or the Lanikai Pillbox Trail over the three-day weekend may walk, bike, take TheBus Route 70 Lanikai, or get dropped off.
Pacific Palisades to be without power
About 2,000 Hawaiian Electric Co. customers in Pacific Palisades will be without power on June 20 as the utility conducts an all-day upgrade of power distribution equipment.
The outage is expected to last from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with work on the upgrade continuing until about 6:30 p.m.
“The equipment upgrades will improve grid resilience and service reliability for the Palisades area,” HECO said in a release issued on Wednesday.
HECO crews will replace six poles, including a riser utility poll that supports the circuit that feeds the Palisades neighborhood. The riser pole replacement will involve a crane plus overhead and underground work. The crane will be parked on Aumakua Street near the intersection with Aamanu Street; one lane of traffic will be closed to accommodate the crane.
A helicopter will be used for the other pole replacements.
Residents are being told to expect brief intermittent traffic stoppages on upper Waimano Home Road and Komo Mai Drive during the helicopter overflights.
The poles and equipment will be air-lifted from Waimano Home Road near the Pearl City Cultural Center to work areas above the Komo Mai Drive hairpin turn leading to Pacific Palisades and along the gulch behind homes on ka‘ika‘i Loop.
Helicopter flights over Waimano Home Road are scheduled from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Flights over the Komo Mai Drive hairpin turn area will take place from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.
In addition, upgrades also will be made to pole-mounted equipment on Moomoo Street, Poepoe Street and Waimano Home Road. Parking will be restricted in these work areas.
Brown water advisory issued for China Walls
The state Health Department issued a brown water advisory Wednesday morning for the area stretching from China Walls to Kuliouou Beach Park.
Rain has resulted in stormwater runoff entering coastal waters, according to the state Health Department. The area includes waters fronting Kawaikui Beach Park, Paiko Lagoon and Maunalua Bay Beach Park as well.
The public is advised to stay out of flood waters and storm water runoff due to possible overflowing cesspools, sewer, manholes, pesticides, animal fecal matter, dead animals, pathogens, chemicals and associated flood debris. While not all coastal areas may be affected by runoff, the state Health Department recommends staying out if the water is brown.
Updates on all water advisories, including a high bacteria count issued for Puako Middle of Lot on Hawaii island, are available at https://bit.ly/2Fe1iBC.
