In a version of pass-it-forward, former University of Hawaii quarterback Sean Schroeder is inviting high school-aged passers and receivers to participate in a free football clinic Friday night at Aloha Stadium.
Participants will receive a T-shirt and tutoring from experienced coaches and former college players, including quarterback guru Vince Passas.
Schroeder, who is founder of 808 Passing Academy, is picking up the tab for the stadium rental and other related expenses, although he is open to accepting donations and sponsorships.
The clinic “is really for who maybe aren’t as high profile and don’t have the means to get the coaching at other places,” Schroeder said. “That’s who we’re kind of catering to.”
Schroeder was the Rainbow Warriors’ starting quarterback in 2012 and 2013 after transferring from Duke, where he earned a bachelor’s degree. He earned a master’s degree at UH. After that, he worked in finance before being admitted to Stanford’s MBA program last year. He has another year before he earns his MBA.
Schroeder started the free clinic in 2016. Despite a hectic schedule — he will participate in an internship this summer – Schroeder wanted to continue the clinic.
“Hawaii holds a special place in my heart,” Schroeder said, adding the clinic “is something I committed to. It’s something I don’t want to turn my back on.”
Schroeder said the clinic is open to all skill levels.
“Whoever wants to come out and get work and get better, that’s what we’re trying to accomplish,” he said.
The event is from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
