One of the most popular comfort South Korean foods is the “jajangmyun,” or noodles with black bean sauce. Its origin goes back to the Chinese “zhajiangmian” dish literally meaning fried sauce noodles from the Shandong region of China.
The dish has a featured role on “Wok of Love,” a drama that takes place at a Chinese-Korean restaurant run by gangsters.
Jajangmyun, also spelled jajangmyeon, is made with black bean sauce, pork and vegetables. There are several variations of it, which you can find here in Hawaii at multiple locations. Search Yelp for it to find Chinese-Korean restaurants that have it on the menu.
Be warned: It’s not the best first-date food as it can get a little messy eating it. You can wind up with black bean sauce all over your mouth by the end of your meal.
