The state Department of Land and Natural Resources deployed rat-sniffing dogs to track down the rodents on Lehua island, a 300-acre, crescent-shaped island west of Kauai that is home to a bird sanctuary. Once the dogs pick up the scent of a rat, their handlers mark the area for application of rat bait.
