So far, much of the history tied to the fledgling Honouliuli National Monument, a World War II civilian internment and prisoner-of-war camp, is limited to photographs and personal memories of the 160-acre site in a lonely Kunia gulch that was bulldozed after the war.
But as plans for the monument, established three years ago, continue to take shape, some buried structural pieces of the camp are surfacing — thanks, in part, to University of Hawaii at West Oahu students using archaeological field techniques. They have uncovered a compound concrete floor and other relics that make the poignant story of a nearly forgotten site all the more compelling.
Wi-Fi expands at Daniel K. Inouye airport
Honolulu’s finally departed from this Hall of Shame: major cities whose airports lack unlimited free Wi-Fi throughout the terminals. Boingo Wireless will expand that service to Terminals 1 and 2 of the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport.
According to the air transport information technology company SITA, 74 percent of airports have that amenity for passengers.
Ironically, now the tide is turning, and HNL may start looking good by comparison. SITA projects that by next year the number of free/unlimited Wi-Fi airports will fall to 54 percent, with more imposing time limits.
