Hamilton Tiger-Cats quarterback Jeremiah Masoli isn’t ready to hand over the starting job just yet.
Coming off a subpar performance in last week’s season-opening loss at Calgary, the former Saint Louis School standout threw for 332 yards and three touchdowns in leading Hamilton to a 38-21 victory over Edmonton on Friday night before an Eskimos crowd of 31,334. The Eskimos dropped to 1-1 for the season. The Tiger-Cats are also 1-1 in the early going of the Canadian Football League campaign.
Masoli played the entire game as former National Football League signal-caller Johnny Manziel watched from the comfort of the bench for the second week in a row. Masoli completed 19 of 29 passes and carried the football seven times for 59 yards. He had one interception.
Hamilton coach June Jones said earlier in the week in an article for ESPN that he believed Manziel will be back in the NFL in two years. Jones is bringing along the former Texas A&M player and Heisman Trophy winner slowly as he adjusts to how things roll in the CFL. Manziel said it will take some time before he adjusts to playing on the wider and longer field. Facing an extra defender and growing comfortable with all the pre-snap movements are also areas Manziel has worked on the past three weeks.
Hamilton will play its first home game next weekend. The Tiger-Cats have been in Alberta for almost two weeks.
In addition to Masoli’s standout performance, running back Mercer Timmis carried the ball 17 times for 133 yards and two TDs.
