A 58-year-old man accused of manslaughter in the death of former sportscaster John Noland pleaded not guilty Monday to the charge in Circuit Court.
Mark A. Coleman appeared at his arraignment before Judge Colette Garibaldi via closed-circuit video link from the Oahu Community Correctional Center after an Oahu grand jury indicted him last week with manslaughter. The jury also charged him with cocaine possession when police arrested him on the night of June 14.
Honolulu Deputy Public Defender Grant Giventer pleaded not guilty to the charges on Coleman’s behalf.
Garibaldi set Coleman’s trial for August and confirmed his bail at $300,000.
Police retrieved surveillance video from nearby businesses that showed Coleman and Noland talking with one another outside of the Maunakea Liquor & Grocery store on Maunakea Street during the early morning hours of June 9.
Footage showed the two then walking a short distance when an argument occurred between the men.
Police said Coleman struck Noland, causing him to fall backward. Coleman then fled the scene. Police arrested him five days later on Maunakea Street, two blocks away from where Noland was attacked.
Noland died June 15 at The Queen’s Medical Center where he had been on life support with a brain injury.
