In the first two weeks of the season, one of the Canadian Football League’s most notable quarterbacks — Hamilton’s Johnny Manziel — has not taken a single snap.
“When will he play?” Hamilton head coach June Jones said in a telephone interview with the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. “Hopefully, never. That means Jeremiah (Masoli) is doing everything he’s doing right now and we win the Grey Cup.”
Masoli, a Saint Louis School alumnus, is second among CFL quarterbacks with 676 passing yards. Manziel is considered to be Masoli’s primary backup.
Manziel, the 2012 Heisman Trophy winner, officially joined the Tiger-Cats last month. Except for a stint in the Spring League, a month-long developmental program, Manziel had not played in a regular-season game since being released from the Cleveland Browns at the end of the 2015 National Football League season.
Jones recently told ESPN.com Manziel “should be playing in the NFL,” But for now, Jones told the Star-Advertiser, “you don’t put him in until the opportunity presents itself, right? It’s like Tyler Graunke.”
When Jones was Hawaii’s head coach, Graunke was the seldom-used backup to quarterback Colt Brennan. Jones said Manziel, like Graunke, will “watch until he gets his chance, just like he’s doing now.”
Jones said Manziel has no problems waiting for his opportunity while learning the intricacies of the Tiger-Cats’ run-and-shoot offense.
“He understands,” Jones said. “He’s a good teammate. He’s supporting Jeremiah, just like Jeremiah will support him if he gets in there. That’s how it’s supposed to be.”
Jones said there are no scripted packages specially designed for Manziel. “Not at this moment, no,” Jones said. “We’re doing what we’re doing, just like we did at Hawaii.”
Jones said Masoli also deserves to play in the NFL.
“Absolutely,” Jones said. “I said that, too, but nobody reported it.”
Masoli played collegiately at City College of San Francisco, Oregon and Mississippi. After participating in the San Francisco 49ers’ training camp in 2010, Masoli played for the CFL’s Edmonton Eskimos before being traded to the Tiger-Cats in 2013. He became the starting quarterback when Jones was promoted to head coach in the middle of the 2017 season.
Until the past year, Jones said, Masoli has “never really been in a passing system where he can show what he can do. He can play. Trust me. He can play.”
