Twenty elite athletes from Hawaii are heading to Seattle for the 2018 Special Olympics USA Games.
More than 4,000 Special Olympics athletes are expected to compete in the USA Games, which run from today through Friday.
The athletes from the Hawaii contingent were selected from among 3,400 participants statewide. Hawaii also will be represented by two Unified Champion School students and Honolulu Police Department officer Tyler Prokopec, who will serve as one of the designated “Guardians of the Flame.”
According to Special Olympics Hawaii, it costs $1,900 to send each athlete to the games. The organization is asking for donations to help defray transportation costs. To make a tax-deductible contribution to Special Olympics Hawaii, call 695-3524 or visit sohawaii.org.
