NEW RESTAURANT SHOWCASES BURGERS
Big on burgers? Chef Toby Sakoda’s got your number with his new restaurant, Burgers on Bishop. Located in the Topa Towers beneath Bar Leather Apron, the sandwich emporium celebrates its grand opening on Monday.
Sakoda, former executive sous-chef at the Outrigger Canoe Club and Oahu Country Club, as well as a sushi chef at Hatsuhana in the Hilton Hawaiian Village, goes beyond burgers with a menu that includes fish and chicken sandwiches, salads, breakfast items, acai bowls and desserts.
The main players — the burgers — come on brioche buns or a salad, and run from Wagyu beef with wild mushrooms ($13) to Niihau lamb ($14). Basic beef or turkey burgers are $8.
Burgers on Bishop is at 745 Fort St., beneath Bar Leather Apron. Hours are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, and until 8 p.m. Fridays, when a pau hana menu includes a 30-ounce pepper steak ($65), braised short ribs ($25), a 1-pound bucket of crab ($36) and the Pau Hana Burger with blue cheese, bacon, mushrooms and avocado ($15).

SURVEY STUDIES FARMERS’ NEEDS
The state has set a goal of doubling local food production by 2020. What challenges do farmers face in meeting such a goal?
The Hawaii Farmer Needs Assessment was designed to find out. The survey targets farmers engaged in agriculture and aquaculture production, seeking to define the support, extension, training, research and public policies that would best meet the needs of Hawaii’s growers.
The survey, which takes about five minutes to complete, is accessible online at hawaiifarmersurvey.com through August. Farmers are encouraged to participate.
The survey was created by the research team of Hunter Heaivilin, a University of Hawaii-Manoa Ph.D. student in the Department of Geography and Environment, and Assistant Professor Albie Miles of the Sustainable Community Food Systems program at UH-West O‘ahu.
Summary results from the survey will be posted on the Hawaii Farmer Needs Assessment website by the end of summer. A final report will be out by the end of the year.
