Hawaii’s Sebastian Zietz won his first-round heat Monday at the Corona Open J-Bay in Jeffreys Bay, South Africa.
Zietz had a two-wave total of 14.03 to beat French Polynesia’s Michel Bourez (13.67) and Brazil’s Ian Gouveia (6.66) in the event, which is the sixth stop on the World Surf League Championship Tour.
In a heat featuring two Hawaii surfers, Keanu Asing was second with an 11.76 and Ezekiel Lau finished third with an 11.06. Brazil’s Willian Cardoso won the heat with a 12.30.
Zietz advances directly to the third round, while Asing and Lau will surf in the second round.
Hawaii’s Coco Ho, Malia Manuel, Carissa Moore and Tatiana Weston-Webb are entered in the women’s event, which has yet to start.
