The Tennis Championship of Honolulu, which is part of the five-week U.S. Open Women’s Wild Card Challenge, will be held Sunday through July 15 at the University of Hawaii courts, the USTA Hawaii Pacific Section announced Thursday.
The event, which has a $60,000 purse, will feature Mililani graduate Alyssa Tobita, who attends Oregon, and former Hawaii Pacific standout Lena Lutzeier.
The series also will have stops in California, Kentucky, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C.
The top-ranking American woman will earn a main-draw wild card to the U.S. Open, which starts in late August in New York City.
Zietz eliminated in quarterfinals
Hawaii’s Sebastian Zietz was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Corona Open J-Bay on Thursday in Jeffreys Bay, South Africa.
Zietz was defeated by Japan’s Kanoa Igarashi 15.17 to 12.44.
Brazil’s Filipe Toledo won his second consecutive J-Bay title by beating Australia’s Wade Carmichael 16.80 to 15.33 in the final.
Hawaii’s Coco Ho, Malia Manuel, Carissa Moore and Tatiana Weston-Webb will compete in the women’s event, which has yet to start.
U.S. men’s volleyball to train, play here
The U.S. men’s national volleyball team, with three Hawaii prep players on its current roster, has revised its training and intra-squad match schedule for later this month.
Expected to be among those training at ‘Iolani School on July 26 are Kawika Shoji (‘Iolani), Erik Shoji (Punahou) and Micah Christenson (Kamehameha).
The matches are scheduled for July 27 at Kamehameha at 7 p.m. and July 28 at Kalani at 6 p.m. Tickets are $10 at the door.
The U.S. advanced in the FIVB Volleyball Nations League on Thursday with a sweep of reigning world champion Poland in Lille, France. The 28-26, 25-17, 25-18 victory sent the U.S. into today’s semifinals against Russia.
