Former Hawaii All-American volleyball player Emily Maglio helped Canada advance to Friday’s semifinals of the Pan-American Cup in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
Maglio had a combined 29 points in Canada’s sweeps of Peru, Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic to win Group A. On Tuesday, the middle blocker had four kills, two blocks and a dig in the 25-23, 25-14, 25-20 victory over host Dominican Republic.
Cowell, Rosenmeier compete in Germany
Hawaii men’s volleyball players Colton Cowell and Brett Rosenmeier upset Singapore’s Fan Yan Mark Shen and Zi Hao Kingsley Tay in Tuesday’s Round 1 of the World University Beach Volleyball Championship in Munich, Germany.
The Rainbow Warriors pair, seeded 28th, went 1-2 in Pool F play with a win over Switzerland and losses to France and the Czech Republic. They defeated the 10th-ranked Singapore duo 21-14, 21-15.
Cowell-Rosenmeier face Belarus’ Dzmitry Abramenka-Pavel Piatrushka, seeded 17th, in today’s classification quarterfinals. The best the Hawaii duo can finish is ninth.
Olympians host volleyball clinics
Three members of the U.S. men’s Olympic volleyball team will hold two youth clinics at ‘Iolani School on Monday.
Kawika Shoji (‘Iolani), Erik Shoji (Punahou) and Micah Christenson (Kamehameha) were part of the U.S. team that took bronze at the Rio Olympics in 2016 and also took bronze at this month’s FIVB Volleyball Nations League.
The first session is from 4:45 to 6:15 p.m. for students in grades 8-9. The second session is from 6:30 to 8 p.m. for students entering grades 10-12.
Both clinics will be capped at 60 participants. The cost is $60 with proceeds benefiting Special Olympics Hawaii.

The three also will be part of the U.S. men’s volleyball training camp July 26 at ‘Iolani. The practice begins at 9 a.m., is open to the public, and will be followed by a question and answer session with athletes and coaches.
The U.S. also will hold Red-Blue scrimmages at 7 p.m. July 27 at Kamehameha Schools and at 6 p.m. July 28 at Kalani High. Tickets are $10 and available at the door.
Chaminade hoops adds guard for 2018-19
Chaminade University men’s basketball head coach Eric Bovaird announced the signing of guard Jake Hutchings to a National Letter of Intent on Wednesday.
The 6-foot-6 sharpshooter spent the last two seasons at Howard College in Big Spring, Texas. Hutchings averaged 13.8 points per game, hitting 50.8 percent from 3-point range and 53 percent of his shots from the floor.
Chaminade signs seven for soccer
Jayson Abe, the Chaminade men’s soccer head coach, announced the signing of seven players for the 2018 season. Five are local products.
The Hawaii players are: Clay Ah Soon, a goalkeeper from Kamehameha; Zackery Banuilos, a midfielder from Moanalua; Lono Kaialau, a forward from Damien; Noah Mokulehua, a midfielder from Kaiser; and Brandon Yasue, a goalkeeper from Kaiser.
Also joining the Silverswords are Reece Hambley, a transfer from Scottsdale Community College in Arizona and Keeton Heggerness from Peninsula High in Gig Harbor, Wash.
