MAGAZINE NAMES BEST IN WINE
Thirty-six Hawaii restaurants have been named winners of Wine Spectator’s 2018 Restaurant Awards, recognizing top restaurants for wine selection and service.
The list is published in the August edition of the magazine, due on newstands this week. It names 3,759 restaurants throughout the world.
No Hawaii restaurants reached the top level, the Grand Award, but nine qualified for the second level, Best of Award of Excellence, and 27 for the Award of Excellence.
Winners of the Best of Award of Excellence: La Mer, Wolfgang’s Steakhouse and Il Lupino Trattoria & Wine Bar, all in Waikiki; Noe at Ko Olina; Lahaina Grill, Longhi’s Wailea, Merriman’s Kapalua and Nick’s Fishmarket Maui, all on Maui; and One Forty in Lanai.
The full list of winners may be viewed at restaurants.winespectator.com and through the free Restaurant Awards app.
PHO TAKES VEGGIE TURN
Think pho and your taste buds are likely to expect a flavorful bone broth, but a vegetarian version is possible.
Adventist Health Castle’s monthly “Eat Well for Life” cooking demonstration, 6 p.m. July 26, features Gordon Au, a Castle food-service employee, preparing his vegan version of the Vietnamese soup.
The class, held in the Wellness Auditorium of the Kailua health center, costs $12, which includes a recipe and samples. Reservations are required a week in advance; call 263-5050.
RESTAURANT AIDS FOOD BANK
Lunch at Flour & Barley this month helps support The Food Basket.
Ten percent of the restaurant’s lunch proceeds in July will be donated to the Hawaii island food bank, which serves residents affected by the volcanic eruption.
Flour & Barley is in the International Market Place in Waikiki. Lunch hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily. Call 892-2993.
CAVIAR, WITHOUT THE FISH
Today is National Caviar Day, so you could eat some fish eggs. But PETA — People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals — prefers that you don’t.
Instead the group suggests Cavi-art, a seaweed-based vegan alternative to caviar. Cavi-art resembles tiny black, red or orange fish eggs, duplicating their texture, if not exactly their taste (a spoonful mainly tastes like a pop of saltiness). As a garnish over sushi, in poke or canapes, Cavi-art would be a reasonable substitute.
The product sells online for $8 to $10 per 3.5-ounce jar. Check amazon.com or vegan sites such as veganessentials.com.
HOT DOG DAY DINING
It’s also National Hot Dog Day today and that means discounts at Hank’s Haute Dogs. All hot dogs and sausages are 20 percent off from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. while supplies last.
Hank’s is in Salt at Our Kakaako. Call 532-4265 or visit hankshautedogs.com.
