Hurricane Hector enters central Pacific

Hurricane Hector was expected to cross into the central Pacific basin Sunday night and continue moving west near 14 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center.

At 5 p.m. Sunday the category 4 hurricane was about 1,130 miles east-southeast of the Big Island’s South Point and packing maximum sustained winds of 140 mph.

Hector is expected to move toward the west-northwest at an increased forward speed throughout tonight as it gradually weakens, then moves west Tuesday and Wednesday.

Ocasio-Cortez to stump for Ing

Maui Democrat Kaniela Ing said Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez will be in Hawaii this week to stump for him in this weekend’s primary elections. Ing is running for Hawaii’s 1st Congressional District seat.

Ocasio-Cortez is the Democratic candidate for New York’s 14th Congressional District after she defeated 10-time incumbent and House Democratic Caucus Chairman Joe Crowley in June.

Ing says he is holding a rally at 6:30 p.m. Thursday but has yet to announce where.
