Makai Miyamoto went 3-for-3 and Jacob Villacorte earned the win as Go Nuts mercy-ruled tournament host Eagle Pass (Texas) 16-5 to end Pool Play at the 14-and-under Babe Ruth World Series in Eagle Pass, Texas, on Tuesday.
Kaden Stremick had two of the team’s 14 hits, including a double, and drove in four runs. EZ Mashima and Chase Hedani each had two base hits.
On the mound, Villacorte went two innings, gave up three runs and struck out three.
Go Nuts finished pool play 4-0 and outscored its opponents 46-7.
Next up for Go Nuts is Norwalk (Conn.) in a semifinal today at 7:30 a.m.
Correa picked to lead HPU baseball
Dallas Correa has been named the head baseball coach for Hawaii Pacific University, the school announced Tuesday.
Correa has served as an assistant for the Sharks for the past three seasons and succeeds Garret Yukumoto, who left the program in June.
“Dallas will be a great role model for our players and I’m looking forward to great things,” said HPU’s Vice President for University Relations and Acting Athletic Director Sam Moku.
Said Correa in a statement, “I am excited for the opportunity to be the head baseball coach at HPU. It’s an honor for me and I’m looking to take the program to new heights, both on and off the field.”
For the past three seasons, Correa was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the Sharks. He also oversaw the team’s catchers, academics and strength and conditioning programs.
Correa was a catcher for the University of the Pacific in the West Coast Conference. While catching at Saint Louis, he was a two-time All-Interscholastic League of Honolulu selection and two-time ILH champion.
Steinberg wins U.S. Mid-Amateur qualifier
Craig Steinberg shot an even-par 71 on Tuesday at Leilehua Golf Course to qualify for the 38th U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship.
Steinberg, from Agoura Hills, Calif., moves on to the U.S. Mid-Amateur at the Charlotte Country Club in Charlotte, N.C. that runs Sept. 21-27.
Waikiki Roughwater Swim date set
The Waikiki Roughwater Swim takes place on Sept. 1, its 49th consecutive year being held. The 2.384-mile race begins at 8:30 a.m. at Sans Souci Beach between the Natatorium and New Otani Hotel and finishes on Duke Kahanamoku Beach at the Hilton Hawaiian Village.
Elite division finishers are expected to cross the finish around 9:15 a.m.
