A 35-year-old man was critically wounded in a stabbing early Saturday at the Nuuanu YMCA on Pali Highway.
Police said a 32-year-old man allegedly used a knife to stab the victim in the head and neck during an argument around 2:40 a.m. The suspect was arrested for second-degree attempted murder.
In addition to fitness and recreational facilities, the Nuuanu YMCA offers men-only room rentals. Michael Broderick, president and chief executive officer of YMCA of Honolulu, said in a written statement the organization would not release any information on the case while police are investigating.
“But what we can say is that the health and safety of those we serve is a priority and we have policies and procedures in place to ensure that to the fullest extent possible,” he said.
Man arrested for striking officer with bat
A 54-year-old man was in police custody Friday after reportedly using a bat to assault a police officer in Pearl City.
The man initially threatened a Walmart employee at about 3:45 p.m., police said. When officers tried to detain him, he attacked a female officer with the weapon, police said. The officer was treated at a hospital for hip pain and released.
The suspect was arrested for terroristic threatening, assaulting a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest.
Girl takes steering wheel after driver collapses
A 12-year-old girl took control of the vehicle she was riding in after its driver collapsed around 10 p.m. Friday on Kahekili Highway in Kaneohe, police said.
The girl and a 43-year-old male, both of Kaneohe, were heading northbound about 100 feet south of Likelike Highway when the incident occurred. Police said the vehicle hit a guardrail before the girl was able to grab the steering wheel and control the vehicle until it came to a stop.
The man later died at a hospital. Further details were not available.
Motorcyclist dies in Pali Highway crash
A 64-year-old Kailua man died Saturday after crashing his motorcycle on Pali Highway.
Police said the man was heading toward town at about 6:15 a.m. when he veered right, struck a curb and was thrown onto the roadway. He later died at a hospital, becoming Oahu’s 38th traffic fatality this year, compared to 26 at this time last year.
The crash occurred on the Kailua side of the highway before the first tunnel, prompting police to close the town-bound lanes of the Pali for about two hours.
Fire burns 75 acres in Wahiawa
A wildland fire burned about 75 acres in Wahiawa Friday, consuming abandoned cars and threatening homeless camps in the area, Honolulu firefighters said.
The fire started at about 5:20 p.m. near Whitmore Avenue and Saipan Drive and forced police to close part of Kamehameha Highway so firefighters could battle the blaze.
Fifty-four firefighters with 17 units responded and were joined by federal firefighters, said Honolulu Fire Department Capt. Scot Seguirant. They had the blaze under control by 7:47 p.m. and contained by 10:38 p.m.
The cause was not determined.
