In the wake of a long layoff caused by Hurricane Lane, the Hawaii soccer team pulled off a come-from-behind 2-1 overtime victory over Saint Mary’s on Thursday in Moraga, Calif.
Raisa Strom-Okimoto scored on a counterattack in the 87th minute for the Rainbow Wahine (2-1) to equalize it 1-1.
In overtime, Leialoha Medeiros converted the golden goal on Strom-Okimoto’s corner kick amid a scrum in front of the net. The Gaels (2-3) had scored just before halftime on a steal and shot by Mililani alumna Kailana Kaeo.
“I absolutely did (think we could come back),” UH coach Michele Nagamine said in a postgame phone interview. “We moved the ball around nicely. Getting into the second half, we had so much more momentum. The kids responded well to the adversity of going down. I really hand it to the team for staying mentally focused throughout the whole entire game.”
The Rainbow Wahine were previously 0-3 all time at SMC.
UH continues play at Pacific (1-3) at 10 a.m. Sunday.
