Letter: Keep personal views out of news stories

Sophie Cocke’s article on gender bias in political races exemplified what is wrong in mainstream media today (“With women losing major races, some question role of gender bias,” Star-Advertiser, Aug. 16).

That article was not news and should not have been placed on the front page of a newspaper. Talk about bias!

People are entitled to their personal opinion, but the article should have been placed on the Views & Voices page, since it contained nothing but personal opinions. For example, to quote a professor of women’s studies, who professed that U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa’s opponent was a “nebbish and ineffectual male politician,” is pure individual opinion (which bordered on sexual bias) and not news.

As a mainstream newspaper, please stick to reporting the news and placing personal opinions where they belong — on the op-ed page.
