Hurricane Norman continues to weaken as it moves toward Hawaii.
Norman dropped to a Category 1 storm from Category 2 as it moved into the Central Pacific basin Monday.
The hurricane was approximately 970 miles east of Hilo and 1,150 miles east of Honolulu.
Maximum sustained winds decreased to 90 miles per hour from 105 mph, and it was traveling west at almost 21 mph.
Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center said the hurricane is expected to weaken over the next couple of days and turn toward the west-northwest by late Wednesday.
In the Eastern Pacific, Olivia has strengthened into a hurricane from a tropical storm.
Olivia has become the ninth hurricane of the season with maximum sustained winds at approximately 75 mph. The storm is slowly moving west at 9 mph.
Jerome Saucier of the National Weather Service said, “It’s not moving very much at all.”
As of 5 p.m. Monday, Olivia was approximately 580 miles southwest of the southern tip of Baja California.
Forecasters predict the hurricane could intensify and potentially become a Category 2 storm today.
