A 91-year-old man was in North Hawaii Community Hospital on Tuesday after suffering life-threatening injuries at a Waimea home Saturday, police said. His son, whowas being held in connection with the father’s injuries, died Sunday in police custody.
Hawaii County police officers, responding to a call from the mainland, arrived Saturday at a home on Kanehoa Street where they found the 91-year-old and his son,Thomas Lional Woods, barricaded inside, police said.
The son could be heard making verbal threats that he was going to kill his father, police said.
The officers eventually were able to take the son into custody and transported him to the South Kohala Police Station.
Police found the father tied up inside a bedroom of the house. He was taken in critical condition to North Hawaii Community Hospital, where he remains.
Detectives opened a second-degree attempted murder case relating to the father’s injuries.
Police said the son was found at 12:50 a.m. Sunday unconscious in a temporary cell at the South Kohala Police Station.
Police personnel began CPR on Woods, who was taken in critical condition by the Fire Department to North Hawaii Community Hospital, where he died Sunday night.
Police began a coroner’s inquest into Woods’ death. An autopsy was ordered to determine the exact cause of death.
