For some sun, fun and a job well done, families can help remove trash, plastic and other debris next month from the areas surrounding Waimanalo Beach Park — a Waikiki Aquarium cleanup event held in partnership with the city and Hard Rock Cafe.
“The purpose of our cleanups is to increase public awareness of the threats of marine debris, specifically focusing on the effects of single-use plastics,” said Lauren Van Heukelem, volunteer program coordinator at the Waikiki Aquarium.

Trash bags, gloves and other supplies will be provided. Participants are asked to bring water and use reef-safe sun protection.
There will also be free cookies, compliments of Hard Rock Cafe. Register soon as past cleanup events have filled up early.
“Families not only help to clean up the beach and park areas, but also learn how they can decrease their negative effects on our oceans and marine life by learning how to lessen the amount of single-use plastics they use,” Van Heukelem said.
