“Run by girls, for girls” — that’s the empowering motto of GTEC (Girls in Technology, Engineering and Computing) Academy, a five-day robotics camp taking place next month at Kalani High School.
The academy is sponsored by the National Center for Women & Information Technology and hosted by female students of Team Magma, Kalani’s robotics team.
GIRLS IN TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND COMPUTING ACADEMY FALL CAMP
>> Where: Kalani High School, 4680 Kalanianaole Highway
>> When: Oct. 8-12 (Lego Mindstorms: 8 a.m. to noon, Coding with Kano: 8 to 11 a.m.)
>> Cost: $100; limited to girls in grades 2 through 8
>> Info: 728-2303, 3008@imagineworks.org, imagineworks.org/gtec-academy
“With this academy, we find new ways to encourage girls to pursue a career or a hobby in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) field, especially since this field is a typically male-dominated field,” said Carmen Lam, GTEC Academy coordinator and a Kalani High School junior.
The camp allows students to explore one of two robotics programs: In Lego Mindstorms EV3, girls in grades 2-6 learn how to build and program their own fully autonomous robot and participate in games, obstacle courses and other friendly competitions.
In Coding with Kano, girls in grades 4-8 learn how to assemble and code simple computers using the Kano Raspberry Pi curriculum. They will learn to program and play games such as Snake, Pong, Scratch and Minecraft.
Camp participation includes a T-shirt and certificate of completion.
