Police are investigating a fatal shooting Thursday night at Century Center that occurred when officers were conducting a search warrant at the mixed-use Honolulu high-rise.
Honolulu Police Department SWAT officers were executing the warrant at an apartment at 1750 Kalakaua Ave. at 6 p.m. when a male pointed a gun at the officers and one officer fired at the male, striking him, according to Deputy Chief John McCarthy. The male was taken in critical condition to a hospital where he died, McCarthy said. Five other people who were in the home were not injured, he said.
Building security and residents said it involved a unit on the 22nd floor, according to a former resident, who did not want to be identified. He said the building has had problems with tenants on that floor.
Ira Gordon, vice president of the building’s association of apartment owners, suspects drug problems, saying people from a particular floor, which he declined to identify, come and go and appear to be homeless.
Gordon said residents were escorted to their apartments and elevators were shut down.
