The Hawaii soccer team ended a three-game winless streak by defeating North Dakota State 2-0 on Saturday at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
UH (4-3-1) got goals from Raisa Strom-Okimoto and Leialoha Medeiros in the 78th and 90th minutes. They share season scoring honors at four scores apiece. Goalkeeper Lex Mata recorded six saves for her third shutout of the season.
After extensive scoreless play in a hot midafternoon game, Strom-Okimoto got UH on the board on a header assist from Medeiros and fired a right-footed shot across her body and behind the Bison goalkeeper from just inside the box.
“While the ball was in the air, I took a peek over my shoulder, I saw Raisa, and I knew that if I sent it to her she’ll get to the end of it and she’ll work her magic like she always does,” Medeiros said.
Medeiros added an insurance score in the final seconds when she got behind the keeper and tapped in a ball played back toward the goal by NDSU (3-4) of the Summit League. She was initially called offside but the decision was reversed.
UH concludes the Rainbow Wahine Shootout at 5 p.m. today against Grand Canyon (3-8).
