A 25-year-old man charged with manslaughter in the deadly attack on a 51-year-old man in Mililani pleaded not guilty to the charge on Monday.
Shane Dilwith appeared at his arraignment before Judge Clarence Pacarro via closed-circuit video link from the Oahu Community Correctional Center on the manslaughter charge involving the death of Thomas Morikawa Jr. of Mililani.
Dilwith’s attorney, Michael Green, entered a not guilty plea on Dilwith’s behalf. Pacarro confirmed his bail at $150,000 and set his trial for November.
Police said Dilwith assaulted Morikawa without provocation at Jungle Juice Market on Waihau Street on Dec. 8, 2017.
Prosecutors allege that Dilwith entered Jungle Juice Market, walked up to Morikawa, exchanged a few words with him, and punched him. He died in a hospital Dec. 15 from head injuries sustained in the attack. The Honolulu Medical Examiner said he died due to blunt force head trauma.
An Oahu grand jury indicted Dilwith on manslaughter charges and issued a bench warrant for his arrest.
Law enforcement authorities located and arrested him in Arizona in May. He was extradicted to Hawaii last week.
Keola Lai fire caused $25K in damage in a condo
Fire investigators said not enough evidence was found to determine what started a fire at a Kakaako condo unit last week, and the cause is being classified as undetermined.
Thirty-nine firefighters responded to the two-alarm fire at 12:03 a.m. Friday on the sixth floor of the 43-story Keola Lai Condominiums at 600 Queen St.
An automatic fire sprinkler doused the fire, and one resident sustained a lower leg injury while evacuating, according to Honolulu firefighters. A woman alerted by a smoke alarm was able to escape the unit without injuries.
Fire investigators said the exact location and manner in which the fire began could not be determined. Fire damage is estimated at $20,000 to the structure and $5,000 to its contents.
