Mufi Hannemann, president and CEO of the Hawaii Lodging and Tourism Association, now has additional duties helping a Washington, D.C., firm lobby on behalf of American Samoa.
Hannemann, the former Honolulu mayor, will remain in Honolulu while working with the D.C.-based lobbying firm The National Group.
Lolo Letalu Matalasi Moliga, the governor of American Samoa, “has been asking for me to provide some advice and guidance on the whole Washington scene for American Samoa,” Hannemann said. “I said I can only do it if I get The National Group to work with me as a partner. They would do the boots on the ground and I would do strategy and quarterbacking from Honolulu. I’m not leaving my job. I’m of Samoan heritage … and I’ve always helped with the Pacific territories. Now I’m parlaying that experience.”
Hannemann said he will work with The National Group on issues ranging from “transportation to health care to infrastructure and coordinating with Congressional Representative Aumua Amata.”
