The Hawaii soccer team fought off the worst kind of deja vu in Sunday’s 2-1 overtime win at Cal State Northridge.
With two seconds left on the regulation clock Sunday, UH gave up a goal to CSUN’s Lindsay Kutscher, sending the Big West Conference game into overtime at a goal apiece.
UH gave up a goal with one second left in double overtime to lose 1-0 at UC Irvine on Friday.
“We were in a state of total disbelief,” UH coach Michele Nagamine said. “You don’t really get to see those kinds of things. This is not basketball, with a lifetime of buzzer beaters. This is soccer. Two in a weekend? I had to call up my hairdresser and move up my dye job to Tuesday.”
But the Rainbow Wahine had time to regroup after Sunday’s allowance. Late in the 10-minute first overtime period, the Wahine crossed the ball in front of the CSUN goal. Sarah Lau came streaking in at the back post and tapped a shot at the goal, which the Matadors’ goalkeeper saved. But Amanda Delgado couldn’t field the ball cleanly, and Lau was there for the rebound at the goal line for the instant winner and a 2-1 outcome.
“The kids rallied, stuck together, came out on fire (in overtime),” Nagamine said, as UH earned just its third road conference win in seven years of Big West play.
Raisa Strom-Okimoto put the Wahine ahead 1-0 in the fourth minute on a corner kick set piece played short.
UH (6-4-1) evened its Big West record at 1-1 heading into this week’s home games against Long Beach State on Thursday and UC Davis on Sunday.
