Former Hawaii second-team All-America middle blocker Emily Maglio, who has been playing indoors for her native Canada, will return for a final beach volleyball season with the Rainbow Wahine.
SandBows coach Jeff Hall confirmed on Tuesday that Maglio will be back in January to complete her animal sciences degree. Maglio was 36-7 last spring teaming with Ka’iwi Schucht and became the first UH player to earn All-America honors in indoor and beach in the same school year.
On Tuesday, Maglio had six kills and three blocks in a 3-0 loss to China in the FIVB World Championship in Sapporo, Japan. Canada finished 0-3 and did not advance to the second round.
U.S. men’s volleyball team earns bronze
The U.S. men’s national team, with four players with Hawaii ties on its roster, finished third at the FIVB World Championship in Turin, Italy, with a 23-25, 25-17, 32-30, 25-19 win over Serbia on Sunday.
Setter Micah Christenson (Kamehameha) had three kills, a block and an ace. Erik Shoji (Punahou) played the entire match at libero, finishing with eight digs.
Not playing in the match were reserve setter Kawika Shoji (‘Iolani) and reserve middle Taylor Averill (University of Hawaii). The U.S. lost to eventual champion Poland in Saturday’s semifinals.
It was the second bronze for the Americans, who also finish third in 1994.
UH baseball finalizes 2019 schedule
A 50-game regular-season UH baseball schedule that includes 32 home games and a rare trip to Ohio State was announced on Tuesday.
The 2019 season begins Feb. 15 as the Rainbows welcome the University of Portland (West Coast Conference) for a four-game homestand that runs through Feb. 17. A doubleheader is scheduled for Feb. 16. The series will start a 20-game homestand for the Rainbows.
Also included in the homestand will be games against Iowa (Feb. 22-24), Longwood (March 1-3, 5), Oregon (March 7-10) and CSU Bakersfield (March 14-17).
For the first time in more than 60 years, UH plays Ohio State, with the series taking place in Columbus, Ohio (March 21-24). The Buckeyes are coming off an NCAA appearance.
Big West Conference play opens up at home with UH facing UC Irvine (March 29-31) and UC Davis (April 5-7).
Big West champion and Super Regional participant Cal State Fullerton comes to Honolulu (April 18-20) after UH returns from their first conference road trip at UC Riverside (April 12-14).
Midweek nonconference road matchups later in the season include: San Diego (Apr. 24) and Cal Baptist (Apr. 30).
The Rainbow Warriors end the home portion of their schedule against UC Santa Barbara (May 17-19)
Other conference road trips include: Cal State Northridge (April 26-28), Cal Poly (May 3-5) and the regular season series finale at Long Beach State (May 23-25).
“It is a point of pride for us to challenge ourselves in the nonconference segment of the schedule every year,” said UH coach Mike Trapasso. “We want to play strong teams and go into hostile environments. It prepares us for the rigors of the Big West Conference, which looks to be as deep as ever this season.”
The Rainbow Warriors finished last season with a second consecutive winning season at 27-24 overall and a sixth-place Big West Conference standing at 11-13.
