Hawaii’s Carissa Moore posted a score of 12.17 in the opening round at the Roxy Pro France, advancing out of her heat on Wednesday at Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France.
Moore’s score was more than enough to beat fellow Hawaii product Coco Ho and New Zealand’s Paige Hareb. It was the third-best score in the opening round behind Brazil’s Tatiana Weston-Webb (14.63) and France’s Johanne Defay (14.14).
By winning her heat, Moore advanced directly to the third round. Fellow local surfers Ho and Malia Manuel will have to surf in today’s elimination round.
The Roxy Pro France carries title implications for Stephanie Gilmore and Lakey Peterson, the world’s top surfers.
Gilmore can clinch the world title by winning the event, or through several other outcomes. If Peterson wins the event, or if Gilmore finishes fifth or below, then the world title will be decided in Maui, the last stop on this year’s Championship Tour.
The contest has been called off for today, due to small and inconsistent surf. Event organizers will reconvene to decide if the event will continue Friday.
