Michelle Hee, president of the Hawaii State Association of Letter Carriers, was among those protesting Monday at the downtown Honolulu Post Office as part of a nationwide effort opposed to the potential privatization of the U.S. Postal Service. Hee said privatization would degrade service and make mailing for some people a large expense. Earlier this year, President Donald Trump established a task force to study why the Postal Service is losing money. His executive order said it is on “an unsustainable financial path and must be restructured to prevent a taxpayer-funded bailout.” U.S. Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii) said Monday in a statement that “privatization means prioritizing profits over people” and that Trump’s plan would hurt low-income and rural communities in Hawaii because servicing these areas is often less profitable than urban areas.
