HILO >> The University of Hawaii Board of Regents will consider a request that proposed rules for the governance of public and commercial activities on UH-managed areas of Mauna Kea be revised and that a second round of public hearings be held to discuss the changes.
The regents will take up the request Thursday at a meeting on the Manoa campus.
University officials did not specify what changes they intend to make but said in a news release that they are based on oral testimony shared at public hearings on Oahu, Hawaii island and Maui and on more than 400 written testimonies.
“Close to 500 people and organizations provided testimony and important feedback on the proposed rules during the public hearing process, and we intend to make changes based on those comments once we receive approval from the board,” said UH-Hilo Chancellor Marcia Sakai in the release. “This is the process that we are committed to, and it is not yet over.”
Teen rescued after suffering leg cramps while swimming
KAILUA-KONA >> Coast Guard and Hawaii County Fire Department personnel collaborated Friday to rescue a 17-year-old male who suffered leg cramps while swimming 50 yards out at Maihi Bay. The incident was reported around 5:30 p.m.
Five other swimmers helped to keep the boy afloat but were unable to get him back to shore. The crew of the Coast Guard cutter Oliver Berry pulled the teen and another swimmer from the water and transported them to the Keauhou Bay pier, where paramedics were waiting.
